Canada’s agri-food exporters reinforce call for predictable, tariff-free trade at Tri-National Accord meetings in Calgary
CALGARY, Oct. 1, 2026 – This week, the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance (CAFTA) reinforced its call for predictable, tariff-free agri-food trade at the 35th Tri-National Agricultural Accord in Calgary.
Provincial and state agriculture leaders and industry representatives from Canada, the United States and Mexico also highlighted the costs of trade uncertainty for North American consumers and producers.
“Farmers, processors and exporters across Canada, the United States and Mexico need certainty to plan and invest,” said Greg Northey, president of CAFTA. “The CUSMA framework of predictable, tariff-free agricultural trade supports businesses and rural communities across North America.”
For agri-food businesses, production and investment decisions often need to be made well before products reach their markets. Predictable trading conditions help businesses plan across borders and maintain reliable supply relationships.
“CAFTA subscribes wholeheartedly to the conclusions expressed by the three countries’ officials in the final communiqué,” said Michael Harvey, executive director of CAFTA. “Structured communication among provincial and state departments of agriculture contributes to the stability of our deep trading relationship.”
Hosted by the Government of Alberta from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1, the Accord brought together provincial and state agricultural leaders and industry representatives from Canada, the United States and Mexico.
CAFTA members that participated in Calgary included the Canadian Canola Growers Association, Canola Council of Canada, Grain Growers of Canada, Canadian Cattle Association, National Cattle Feeders’ Association, Canadian Pork Council, Cereals Canada, CropLife Canada and Pulse Canada.
CAFTA will continue working with agricultural partners across North America to advance this call and represent the interests of Canadian agri-food exporters.
