CAFTA Concerned About China's Imposition of Tariffs on Canadian AgriFood Commodities

(Ottawa, Canada – March 10, 2025) The Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance (CAFTA) raised concerns today about the Chinese government’s decision to impose retaliatory tariffs on Canadian agri-food commodities. China is an important market for agri-food exports and new Chinese tariffs will hurt Canadian farmers and the broader value chain.

“CAFTA and its members raised concerns about possible retaliatory action by China with federal officials ahead of the government imposing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, steel and aluminum in Fall 2024,” said Michael Harvey, Executive Director of CAFTA. “Given current trade and geopolitical uncertainty for Canada’s agri-food exports, it is imperative that the Government of Canada engage with China as quickly as possible to find a resolution to this issue.”

CAFTA and its members will continue to engage with federal officials as this issue continues to unfold.
